Special Screening and Forum with Cannes Film Festival Best Director Brillante Mendoza

Nights at the Negros Museum proudly presents the special screenings of "Kinatay" and "Serbis" by Cannes Film Festival 2009 Best Director Brillante Mendoza on October 14, 2011.

"Kinatay", which won for Mendoza the Best Director in the Cannes Film Festival, is a story that revolves around a young criminology graduate who wants to earn money so he can marry his girlfriend. He was given a chance to earn big bucks but he later found himself involved in the killing of a woman and chopping her to pieces. This will be shown on October 14, Friday, 2:30 PM at the Museum Gallery. 

The other film of Direk "Dante" Mendoza to be screened at the Negros Museum on October 14, Friday at 1:00 PM is "Serbis", 2008 entry to the Cannes Film Festival. "Serbis", a drama, revolves around a family who runs a dilapidated movie theater that doubles as family business and living space. 

At one time a prestige establishment, the theater now runs porn double bills and serves as a meeting ground for hustlers of every conceivable persuasion. 

The film captures the sordid, fetid atmosphere, interweaving various family subplots with the comings and goings of customers, thieves and even a runaway goat while enveloping the viewer in a maelstrom of sound, noise and continuous motion. (excerpts of movie press releases)

About Direk Jay Abello:

Jay Abello is an industry disciple who finds passion within the frame of artistry. He has made of himself a dedicated filmmaker and Cinematographer on production experience working under five different highly acclaimed directors (Erik Matti, Yam Laranas, Peque Gallaga, Laurice Guillen and Mark Meily), paying his dues as Property Master to Co-Writer (Sa Huling Paghihintay, Viva Films, 2001 and Dos Ekis, Viva Films, 2001) and as Assistant Director in the course of 7 years.

By 2002, he moved to television as floor director to three of the top rated television series (Ang Iibigin Ay Ikaw, Te Amo, and Mulawin) under GMA-7 Network Television.

Jay Abello values his light and composition. He took photography lessons via a correspondence course at the New York Institute of Photography in 1997 and has become an avid hobbyist since. In 2003, he started apprenticing under Lee Meily for Cinematography in television commercials and one feature film.

A love for telling stories has lent existence to two of his best known short films

7-Cut (1998, Writer/Director/Producer) and Beinte Siete (2004, Writer/Director-

/Producer) both winners of the Crystal Piaya for Best Picture in the Negros Summer Workshops.

By May 2006, he attends the Digital Photography workshop at The Newberry Library in Chicago, IL., Feature Film Lighting Workshops in Rockport College, Rockport, ME by July, and the Kodak 16mm Cinematography Workshop by September.

After his first feature film as Director/Producer/Co-Writer Ligaw Liham in 2007 (Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival), he went on to do mostly Cinematography work for Mark Meily (Camera Café and You Women), Joanna Vasquez Arong (Amihan, Team Los Indios, Philippines for the International Documentary Challenge), Coreen Jimenez (Kano: The American and his Harem, a full-feature documentary, Arkeo Films) and directed a TV show Hush Hush for TV5. His second film Namets! (Yummy) which he directed, produced and did associate photography for was also a finalist in the 2008 Cinemalaya Festival.

He is currently working on a full-feature documentary on the sugar industry of Negros entitled Pureza (Bonfire Productions, Inc. and Negros Pureza Foundation, Inc.) and in pre-production on a water movie called SUR: the beauty of the South (Bonfire Productions, Inc).

The Negros Museum presents “Identity 1” of artist  Jun-Jun  Sta. Ana from September 9 to October 9, 2011. The exhibit will open September 9 at 9:30am at the Negros Museum.

Sta. Ana is a Chicago-based artist who has exhibited in different galleries and museums in the Philippines such as the Vargas Museum-University of the Philippines, Intercontinental Hotel in Makati, Avellana Art Gallery in Pasay City and here in Negros at Balay ni Tana Dicang’s Capitana Gallery.

The artist also had exhibitions all over the United States and Russia. For these past few years, he has exhibited at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Chicago Cultural Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, Koltsovo Airport in Yekaterinberg, Russia, and at the Philippine Consulate in Chicago Illinois.

The Negros Museum presents the recent collection “Si Tatay, Si Nanay, Si Toto kag Si Inday” of Talisaynon artist Ramon De Los Santos at the PHINMA Main Gallery of the Museum on Friday, August 19 at 6PM.


Artist Ramon De Los Santos, also known as Manong Ramon, will include his 37 artworks (sculpture and bas relief on wood) depicting children, their family and their daily activities. De Los Santos also had 2 solo exhibits “Si Toto kag Si Inday” (October 2010) and “Paskwa” (December 2010)  at the Museum last year.

Both exhibits, which include his paintings and terra cotta bas relief on wood,  were well-received by local art patrons and new art lovers. Some of his works were brought to as far as the United States, Europe and other countries by museum guests and visitors who have seen his work in these exhibits.

He was also one of the chosen 10 Negrense veteran artists who was invited by the Negros Museum to do an artwork with the antique Silay bricks for a Special Auction last June 2011.

His subjects are children and their daily activities like playing and doing house chores. His works also convey local Negros scenes and icons such as sugarcane, love of gamefowl and the infamous manoglibods.

The Negros Museum chose Manong Ramon’s  “Si Toto kag Si Inday” as its icon for its Tuklas Learning Center for Children because his works exude outstanding Filipino values like being industrious and hardworking. Tuklas supports the Museum Educational Program (MEP) for workshops, events and specially designed activities for the children of Negros.

The artist was also the teacher for the Basic Drawing and Painting and Terra Cotta Sculpture for Kids (7-14 years old) for the 15^th Negros Museum Summer Arts Workshops. He will also be one of the instructors for the Weekend Workshops at the Museum (WWM) this coming September 2011.

CRISOSTOMO IBARRA COMES TO LIFE IN BALLET PHILIPPINES TOUR

Crisostomo Ibarra, the protagonist in Dr. Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere, leaps from the pages of the incendiary novel and onto the stage in a contemporary dance retelling by Ballet Philippines July 25, 2011 at the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Gym with 2 shows at 2PM and 6PM.

Artists’ groups of Negros Dance Pull Dance Company and The Performance Laboratory Inc. come together with The  Negros Museum to commemorate the 150^th Birth Anniversary of our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal with this rare performance of Ballet Philippines in Bacolod.

Under the choreography of Paul Alexander Morales (Artistic Director of Ballet Philippines) and music by Jed Balsamo, Crisostomo Ibarra springs to life in a new production about a young man’s struggles to stand tall in his ideals despite the cruel buffets of fate. The dance narration takes the audience inside the psychological world of Ibarra and strips bare this epic story that underscores the continuing relevance of Rizal’s timeless character.

Crisostomo Ibarra, the dance, highlights the life of an idealist reformer, a man striving to make a change in a society living under corruption and oppression. It takes an introspective look at the life of a hero sacrificing his personal happiness for love for country. The dance resonates with hope and reflects the Filipinos’ need for heroes in a society buffeted by many challenges and divergent beliefs.

Crisostomo Ibarra is presented in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts NCCA in celebration of the Philippines as the ASEAN Cultural Capital for 2010-2011. It topbills Jean Marc Cordero reprising Crisostomo Ibarra; silver medalist in the recently concluded International Ballet Competition, Candice Adea, as Maria Clara; Kit Trofeo, Angel Gabriel, and Carissa Adea lead the cast. The BP touring group also includes Bacolod’s Macel Dofitas.

This production is Ballet Philippines’ second offering for its 41st season, Hero’s Journey. An excellent artistic and educational supplement for students taking Filipino and Rizal classes, Crisostomo Ibarra brings together history and ballet in this new interpretation of the novel
that shaped a nation. Crisostomo Ibarra is a winner for Outstanding Dance Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance in the upcoming 2010 Gawad Buhay Awards for the Performing Arts.

New Museum Hours & Days

The Negros Museum announces new Museum Hours

The Negros Museum will open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10AM-8PM starting next Friday, June 24, 2011.

TNM Executive Director Tanya Lopez encourages everyone especially the working sector and their families to visit the Museum and attend its different events after work and on weekends. The extended hours hope to give room for other interested Negrenses and guests to enjoy the Museum, its exhibits and galleries.

June 24, 2011 will also mark the re-opening of the Museum Café with a unique menu of natural artisan culinary art highlighting Negros’ natural and locally grown food like coffee from La Granja. The Café can also sit more than 50 people where one can enjoy either PHINMA Main Gallery’s art exhibits or the exterior grounds with Raymond Legaspi ‘s mural “Hacienda Unwind”.

Exciting new things will be happening at the Negros Museum with the newer Museum Café to be officially opened on June 24, 2011, Friday at 6:30PM.

For the Opening of the Museum Café, different artists from all disciplines and from all parts of Negros are coming together to support this addition to the local museum. Theater groups BINHI Creative Arts, Maskara Theater Ensemble and Negrense musicians will perform different numbers to toast to the celebration. The visual arts will be represented by Silaynon artist Raymond Legaspi with his past works in exhibit at the PHINMA Main Gallery and the mural at the garden of the Cafe entitled "Hacienda Unwind".

A Special Auction for the benefit of The Negros Museum will be happening on the same night with ten of the most successful artists of Negros, like Charlie Co and Nune Alvarado, each  of them agreed to work on a very special board set with a historic piece from Silay City.

The night will also showcase the work of 10 volunteer photographers around the province who came to share their time for the Negros Museum. Museum Café will be using more than 200 photos from the special photo shoot sessions that these hobbyists and professional photographers have done the past few days.

The Museum Cafe's unique menu boasts of fresh and natural ingredients which are mostly locally sourced and produced. They will serve Batangas coffee and the Buenos Aires blend of Maao. This is the only Café here in Negros that will serve 10 of the Top 100 Teas in the World which includes Rosebud Tea, Black Peony Tea, Lapsang Souchong Smoked Black Tea, Big Leaf Baimudan White Tea and many more.

Just as bread was baked hundreds of years ago, the four kinds of bread for your sandwich is made the old fashion way: white flour, whole wheat flour, corn flour, water, yeast and our humble Bago sea salt. One can choose from 36 different combinations of sandwiches with ham made from scratch like the one-year cured ham Pata Negros, or with fruit jams or with Sagay beef croquettes. The light, homemade young cheese from La Carlota milk and curdled with lime, certainly a must-try, is also an exciting addition to the list.

The Negros Museum in collaboration with The Performance Laboratory Inc. with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts will be starting its 3rd Pandayan Summer Theatre Arts Workshops this May until the 1st week of June 2011 at the Negros Musuem with focus on writing, technical theater management and advance theater courses.

Technical Theater workshop which will be starting today May 18 until 21st focuses on the basics of Technical Theater and will include theories and practical applications on the following disciplines: Lighting/ Sound/ Scenery/ Stage Property/ Costumes/ Hair/ Makeup/  Special Effects / Video. However, emphasis shall be given to Lighting and Sound/Audio.

Instructor for Technical Theater will be Checcs Osmena-Orbida who has been working as Technical Director and Sound Designer for more than 20 years now with top concert/event directors in the country on top of being a stage director, screenwriter, and stage/ film actress. 

Ford Foundation International Fellow and Ateneo de Manila University professor Glenn Sevilla Mas will be giving the workshop on Adapting and Devising a Work Specifically for the Stage. This advanced theater course involves dramaturgy and collaboration focusing on the roles of the director, actor and playwright. Participants will collaborate with each other in devising a theater piece which will be showcased during the culminating activity. This will be on May 26-29.

And from June 2-5, Pandayan Summer Theater Workshops present Scene Improvisation with Focus on Unit Study which will be taught by Romeo Narvaez. This course specifically designed for actors and directors includes unit study on acting, especially delivering long, kilometric lines and monologues, scenario making based on the given script and practical exercises on observation with emphasis on character development.

Romeo Narvaez, is the Artistic Director of the Sining Kabpapagariya Ensemble of Mindanao State University – General Santos City.  He is currently a member of the Committee on Dramatic Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and one of the stalwart pioneers of Theater and Peace in Mindanao.  His play “Dula Ta” which centers on children in conflict has received critical acclaim and an invitation to perform in several European countries.

TRAINOR’S TRAINING WORKSHOP

The Negros Museum and National Commission for Culture and the Arts thru the Artists for Crisis Program invites all NGOs working with children and interested participants to the Art for Healing Trainor’s Training Workshop which will be held on May 23 – 26 at the Negros Museum.

The workshop is specifically designed for support staff of institutions handling “children in crisis, as well as local artists and guidance counselors/psychology teachers who are interested in using Art for Healing.

The objectives of the workshop are as follows: to provide “children in crisis” a creative and artistic venue of expressing powerful emotions; to equip support staff of institutions handling children in crisis, basic skills to interpret and process art images and               expressions; to help institutions handling children in crisis create an in house program using Art to help in the healing of traumatic experiences; and, to establish a (possible) network between institutions handling children in crisis, local artists and counselors/psychology instructors which can help sustain a program using Art for Healing.

The Negros Museum envisions a collaborative effort between local Negrense Artists who will conduct the art workshops, with the NGO support staff interpreting and processing the art expressions in partnership with guidance counselor/psychologists so that they could develop activities which can help address the issues of their clientele which can help in the process of healing.

“Children in Crisis” refers to children who have experienced emotional, physical and sexual abuses as well as children who have undergone traumatic experiences and the “Support Staff” of institutions handling “children in crisis” refer to social workers, house mothers/fathers, volunteers, educators.
