The Negros Museum is proudly hosting a seminar-workshop for Filipino, history and social sciences teachers entitled “Teaching Rizal in the Classroom: Making the Rizal Course Relevant in Our Time” on December 10, 2010, Friday from 8AM-5PM at the museum.

The local museum is inviting all public and private high school, college and university schools to send their representatives to this one-day workshop which is in collaboration with the 2010 Rizal Day National Organizing Committee, the National Historical Commission and the Philippine Historical Association.

This is also in line with the museum’s Continuous Education Program, Workshops and Seminar to provide venues of staff development and training to individuals and organizations in the province and nearby provinces.

Previous Teaching Rizal Seminars organized by the PHA were held in Rizal Shrine in Dapitan City (2005), Silliman University in Dumaguete City (2006), University of San Agustin in Iloilo City (2007) and Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City (2008).

We are inviting you to come to our Christmas Bazaar entitled “Ring The Bells for Christmas” at the Negros Museum on November 21, 22 & 23, 2010 from 10AM to 8PM in the evening.

This 3-day affair will include Food Tasting, a Christmas Art Exhibit entitled “Paskwa” by Ramon Delos Santos and different suppliers of Christmas gifts, giveaways, household items, décor, children’s wear, adult clothes and a lot more.

TAL KRAVITZ, Israeli Musician @ The Negros Museum

WORLD MUSIC PERFORMANCE at The Negros Museum

Israeli World Musician Tal Kravitz

The Negros Museum, in cooperation with the Embassy of Israel and Vallehermoso Helping Hands Foundation, is bringing the “Amazing World of Tal Kravitz” on November 18, 2010 at 2:00PM at the Museum lobby.

The Israeli Embassy and the Museum invite interested Negrense musicians and artists as Tal Kravitz aims to create an encounter between Israeli classics and ethnic musical instruments in his musical journey.

The show is based on a blend of cultures and folk instruments from all around the world. Ireland’s Celtic harp, Iran’s zarb drum, Africa’s adongo, Bulgaria’s kaba gaida bagpipe and Scotland’s bagpipe are just some of the folk instruments that Kravitz will be using in his performance.

Negrense musicians and artists are encouraged to be a part of this musical encounter in an afternoon of singing, accompaniment with ethnic percussion and cultural exchange.

The visiting embassy hopes to raise awareness of the Israeli culture and tradition through music and encourage a lively intercourse of traditions among its people and the Filipinos.

13th Adobo Festival

at Balay Negrense, Silay City

It was a sunny and fun Friday morning as culinary enthusiasts, chefs, restaurateurs and foodies come together for the Negros Cultural Foundation’s Adobo Festival as it marks its 13th year with the 112th Cinco De Noviembre at the historical Gaston house Balay Negrense, Silay City.

 Very special guest for the event was famed restaurateur Margarita “Gaita” Araneta-Fores who was welcomed by Silay City Mayor Jose “Oti” Montelibano and his First Lady Madam Marissa and NCF President Lyn Gamboa.

Gaita Fores hastily shared that she came from her family’s hometown Bago City as they also celebrated Sigabong for their Cinco’s activities. Gaita, a nick she preferred, talked about how she was excited about the Adobo Festival and technically “invited herself” to this year’s festival. 

“I love Adobo and I must admit I got my inspiration from Adobo for most of dishes that I made for my restaurant. Adobo has reached tables internationally. And now I come here to enjoy and most probably to learn from the contestants and with you,” she said in her short message to fellow Negrenses.

Fores alongside Sugarland’s Chef Datu Pendatun, Joe Chan of BISCOM, Gerardo Veloso and the festival’s originator Lynell Gaston judged the 17 entries for the Adobo Cooking Contest. Robert Harland’s Adobo Crevette A l’Anglaise was given the First Prize and Leanna Marie Severino’s Adobo Pasta ranked Second and Third to Cicero Bayle’s Angus Adobo with Sweet Ham.

The newer Muscovado Cooking Contest on its 5th year now was joined by 13th entries from all over the province. Judges were Kring Locsin of Sugarland, Felicia’s Chef Vincent Macasa and Institute of Culinary Arts De La Salle’s Chef Richard Ynayan. The Muscovado Sampler by Jason de Oca was hailed First Prize. Other entries which also placed were the following: Cookies by Paul Benedict Castillo (2nd) and  Butter Cream Silvanas by Victor Dumancas (3rd).

NCF President Lyn Gamboa beamed with pride as the festival this year also gave way to several interesting sidelights such as the free food tasting of Nature’s Village’s Buffalo Adobo with Mango Chutney, Silay Manuglibods, Kitchen Art Exhibit and a Gourmet Adobo Demo by Chef Datu of Sugarland Hotel. All of these activities of the garden party were warmly participated and received by the hundreds of Negrenses who flocked this year’s celebration. Gamboa hopes to see more newer faces next year for the 14th Adobo Festival.

A Lecture Exchange
on Filipino & Visayan Food

Chefs, culinary students and food enthusiasts are invited to a free lecture exchange entitled How We Can Move Filipino Food Forward by Filipino food author and New York based restaurateur Amy Besa at the Negros Museum on October 27, 2010, Wednesday at 10AM.

In 2006, Amy Besa co-authored with her husband Romy Dorotan the book Memories of Philippine Kitchens which won the  IACP Jane Grigson Award for Distinguished Scholarship in the Quality of  Research Presentation. 

She now owns the restaurant Purple Yam in Brooklyn and runs it with her husband. The couple also owned and manage Cendrillon from 1996 - 2005, a Filipino restaurant in New York.

Dear FRIENDS,

For the past 12 years, Negrense food enthusiasts have gathered together at the Balay Negrense Museum every 5th of November to share a gustatory experience in line with our observance of the Cinco de Noviembre Celebration in Silay City . 

The Adobo Festival which features an Adobo Cooking Competition has been a testimony of our mark as Filipinos – adobo being a dish prepared by our ancestors long before the Chinese traders came to the Philippines and the Spaniards colonized us.

Now on our 13th year, the Negros Cultural Foundation once again brings together culinary experts, cooking aficionados and budding chefs to challenge to come up with new tastes for this tried and tested Filipino dish.  To add to the excitement, we also celebrate the 5th year of the Muscovado cooking competition which has produced a rich harvest of recipes using muscovado sugar as main ingredient.

The Adobo Festival also features Gourmet Adobo demo by local chefs and Negrense restaurateurs, food booths, and Negrense artists’ KITCHEN ART EXHIBIT featuring artworks priced from P5 to P5,000.00.

You can also enjoy the ADOBO LUNCH which will be served from 11AM to 1PM only. Tickets at P200.00 per person (consumable) are available at the Negros Museum starting November 3 and in Balay Negrense during the event.

     REGISTRATION

1.       Registration is from October 1 – 30, 2010.

2.       Registration form is available at the Balay Negrense and Negros Museum and can be requested from the Negros Museum email: negros_museum96@yahoo.com

3.       Recipe for the Adobo entry shall be submitted together with the registration form and P100.00 registration fee/recipe.

     ELIMINATION

4.       The pre-finals will be held on November 4, 2010 at 4:00pm in Balay Negrense, Silay City. Contestants will bring their cooked adobo and necessary props for the presentation.

5.       The 10 Finalists will cook their adobo on the spot on November 5, 2010 at

Balay Negrense.  Cooking will start at 9:00 am and will be judged after. Participants are to bring their own ingredients, cooking utensils & stove.

     COOKING CONTEST RULES:

6.       Entries must be original or an interpretation of a tried and true recipe.

7.       Basic ingredients must include vinegar and garlic.

8.       The following will not be accepted as ingredients: dog, cat, carabao, turtles, eagles, spotted dear, ocean mammals, or any endangered plant or animal.

9.       Measurements for the ingredients should be in metric system.

10.   Recipes should indicate the number of servings.

     JUDGING

11.   Criteria for Judging

Originality of Dish             40%

Presentation                      20%

12.   The recipes will be tried the judged by a panel.  Judges’ decision is final.

13.   The contestant with the highest score will be declared the winner.

14.   All on the plate must be edible.
